Earlier this year, I made my first trip ever to Pakistan to learn more about the country’s incredible efforts to wipe out polio. Their energy and enthusiasm reminded me of what I saw in India and Nigeria when those countries were traveling the final mile to eliminate polio within their borders.
But the last mile is often the toughest.
In recent weeks, the world received a sobering reminder of this fact when three new cases of wild poliovirus were detected in Pakistan.
Even with the new polio cases, the virus is still circulating at extremely low levels and the world has an historic opportunity to make sure this virus never paralyzes a child again. The fact is, we’ve never been closer to ending polio and it’s critical that the world doesn’t lose sight of this goal.

خاندانی قبضہ مافیا کا اتفاق و اتحاد اپنے پیروں پر کلہاڑی مارنے کے اثرات سامنے آ چکے ہیں سابقہ حکومت پر جو تنقید کی جارہی تھی آج وہی کار ہائے نمایاں انجام دینے پر مجبور و لاچار زبردستی کے حکمراں دلائل دینے کے لیے رات دن ایک کررہے ہیں۔ راقم الحروف پہلے بھی اس غیر فطری ملوکی اتحاد پر بہت کچھ احاطہ تحریر میں لا چکا ہے جو کچھ روز روشن کی طرح عیاں ہے۔ اس غیر فطری اتحاد میں جس بات پر اتفاق ہے وہ کرپشن اختیار و اقتدار اپنی نسل کے لیے مخصوص کرنا ہے اور ایسے قراردادیں و قوانین وجود میں لانا ہے جس کی بدولت اپنے خاندان برادری و نسل کو ہر طرح کا تحفظ حاصل ہوسکے۔ اس گھمبیر صورتحال میں نااہل نالائق غیر قانونی اور کے پالک زبردستی کے افراد کسی صورت قابو پانے کی اہلیت نہیں رکھتے اس کی وجہ ان کا داغدار ماضی ہے۔ اس حقیقت سے انکار نہ تو ملک میں کیا جاسکتا ہے اور نہ ہی بیرونی دنیا میں کہ ایک طویل مدت تم اقتدار میں رہنے والے صرف اپنی ذات پر توجہ دیتے رہے اور دنیا کی آسائشوں کے حصول کی خاطر ملک و قوم کو لوٹتے رہے بلکہ ظلم بھی ڈھاتے رہے۔ اسے ایک نہ بھلائے جانے والا سانحہ ظلم یا بڑا حادثہ ہی تسلیم کیا جا سکتا ہ...
